Use OpenELEC, which was invented for people, that can't or don't like to fiddle arround with linux. Ubuntu ships a broken kernel in their (unpatched) LTS version which does not allow you to start X on certain AMD hardware.

After 3h digging and testing i found solution for me.
I used Kubuntu 14.04 + Nvidia GT630. Default installation ended with "Kodi needs hardware accelerated ... bla blabla ".

Here it is - solved my problem. Now all works fine ... under Hardware i get:
GPU: GeForce GT 630/PCIE/SSE2
OpenGL version: 4.4.0 NVIDIA 340.76

... i hate linux
