Android Nvidia Shield Android TV (Updated Jan 26 2017 - 5.0 update)
I'm having some trouble navigating to the Kodi userdata folder. I have it installed on a microSD card and when I mount it through windows, I do not see the Kodi hidden folder, this path is simply blank: D:\Android\data\org.xbmc.kodi\files,. I also tried on a Mac and the folder is empty as well. Both times I've had hidden files/folders visible. What's the easiest way to transfer data to the shield?

If I'm not mistaken its a hidden folder in there called .kodi. I haven't tried accessing it on another machine via file browser...I just use a direct USB connection and adb shell, adb push and adb pull

Cheers!

Hey guys,

I just got my new Nvidia Shield Android TV (updated to 1.4) and installed Kodi 15.1 isengard. I am using a 4K samsung tv

Whenever I watch a live stream (or any video content) kodi crashes back to the Shield home screen after about 5 minutes. I've tried turning on the kodi options to sync to monitor refresh rate to no avail Sad

Any ideas?

I don't have a 4k tv, but do you have a 1080 monitor you could try to see if it has anything to do with outputting to 4k?

It works fine on a normal monitor.

Trying to use different HDMI ports now for the 4k screen.. slightly better. one crash in 30 min.

I have a few questions regarding SHIELD:

1) Does it pass through Master Audio, eg DTS-HD MA?
If not is this a software or hardware limitation, as in could it come out in the future?

2) What would be the best settings for Video output on SHIELD?
As in Sync playback to display, or what?
I will be using pass through to my AMP if that makes any difference?

Got a Shield 16 GB today from Microcenter in Maryland. Running Kodi, Plex and VLC at 1080p 60 Hz, haven't messed with 24p yet. Probably won't for a while because I pretty much know what to expect from what I've read. :-)

Kodi runs great w/ Aeon MQ 5 skin. I have it tweaked really nice for a great set top box experience.

I knew about the DTS HD & True HD passthru issues beforehand, so I'm hoping that gets into a future release.

Not as impressed with the image quality however, compared to my Kodi Win 7 PC with a Geforce GT 720 card. Getting banding on my torture test clip, Breaking Bad S5 E7, "Say My Name", full quality MKV rip.

When they pull up in the desert and Walt says the tanks not coming, they are very subtle shades of blue in the background sky. The GT720 handles it perfectly, nice smooth gradients of blue.

On the Shield, same scene, noticeable banding. Used the Shield VLC player with same results. I'm hoping the Kodi player gets some tweaks to its decoding engine and improves image quality and it's not a HW issue...but that's 2 different players. Going to try the native player soon via USB thumb drive & compare.

Shame if Nvidia packs all this horsepower under the hood but it can't get picture quality of a $70 blu ray player.

Other quick impressions:

Netflix runs really smooth, very fast interface, same with You Tube.

Could've sworn VUDU was an available app....sucks it isn't. It's my go-to streaming HD quality app on my Roku & Blu Ray player.

Kodi played all my DTS CD rips, and no problem w/ web server remote control from my tablet.

Overall it's a cool box that seems to have an identity crisis: it's packed with lots of hardware but the GUI and settings menus seem dumbed down. I wouldn't mind a customizable interface and some more depth to the menus. It needs a little more geek to it.

HDMI-CEC Control

SHIELD supports advanced HDMI-CEC features that further enhance your home theater experience.

HDMI-CEC Volume control sets SHIELD’s volume to the max level and enables you to control audio volume using your TV or receiver’s remotes.
HDMI-CEC also enables you to use your TV’s or audio receiver’s remote to navigate through some of the Android TV’s user interface.
HDMI-CEC’s “One Touch Play” feature enables your SHIELD to automatically turn on your audio receiver and television when you wake up your SHIELD from sleep.
HDMI-CEC “One Touch Play” can be enabled by going to “Settings -> HDMI -> HDMI CEC One Touch Play”
HDMI-CEC volume control can be enabled by going to “Settings -> System-> HDMI-CEC Volume control”

TV Overscan Correction

Older TVs typically exhibit overscan issues that cause part of the picture to be cropped along the edges of the display. While some TVs offer overscan correction within their picture adjustment options, others may not have this option.
To help users fix overscan issues on older TV sets, SHIELD includes an overscan correction tool that enables users to adjust the size of the image to fit the screen.
To access this tool, go to “Settings -> HDMI -> Adjust for Overscan”. Then follow the instructions on the screen to adjust the displayed image size.

Very cool, especially if this is standard to AndroidTV OS* and not a custom job.

(with licenses paid and all that so not every AndroidTV device may get such feature)

Definitely a custom update by Nvidia. Which licenses are you speaking off? The 2.0 update only adds HD Audio pass through not decoding.

Vc-1 decoding is being added as well.

It is & it isn't.

DTS & DTS-HD passthrough have been added to the Android API's for Marshmallow (see http://developer.android.com/reference/a...ormat.html ), so what Nvidia have done is backport these to the version of Lollipop they run.

As for TrueHD, Nvidia and leant on Google and have agreement from them that TrueHD will be an officially supported from Android N I think, so again the TrueHD support is a backport of what should become an official part of the API.

Note that although these API's are now available it needs work from our side to get Kodi working with them, however while the work to get passthrough working with these API's has started it's not a simple process, so it's currently unknown how long this will take.

Will the added support for new Nvidia 23.976 API be a while before its included in Kodi nightlies?

Nothing additional needed there, although dynamic refresh rate switching isn't very reliable at the moment, however a fix is already prepared for that and is awaiting sign off.
