I notice that when Kodi 15.0 is installed on Windows 8.1, DXsetup.exe (DirectX Installer) runs regardless of the fact that the latest DX runtime distributable predates Windows 8. Couldn't the installer automatically detect the Windows version and decide whether DX setup is necessary?

What you are asking is exactly what the dxsetup.exe runtime is doing...

Just uncheck it in the installer, if you know you have the right Dx dlls installed. It looks like Kodi needs D3DX9_43.dll (32 bit version in SysWOW64).

What I'm suggesting is that the setup program ought to be able to detect automatically that DX install is not needed.

1). if the dxsetup.exe already performs the system checks, why would you ask the operating system to perform this task a 2nd time.
