Asrock N3150-ITX Braswell + Windows = No HD Audio passthrough?
#16
Hi!

I have Asrock MB with N3700 and also experience issue with no-audio HD passthroudh. The newest driver still does not provide this functionality.

However I'm thinking about practical differences between encoding HD audio by software and by AVR. My AVR is able to decode all formats but is it really necessary? Can you hear the differences between this and encoding HD audio by kodi software and sending it to AVR as PCM?

I would like to avoid a migration to linux but if you think the sound quality is noticeably better when using passthrough and let AVR encoding audio I'll think about it.

Just try yourself - but some linux from usb stick.

No - the driver does not support it ... that's long known and the intel windows driver devs don't care to fix it. you will see - booting linux will resolve it.

Quote:In regards to your last question, Braswell processors support HD passthrough but does not support HBR’s(High Bitrates). Hence it will not support HD Audio format with HBR.
what's mean? HBR? Huh

So I've installed Ubuntu 15.10 with Kodi 15.2 and... it seems to be a long journey Wink

Ubuntu itself works fine with 5.1, I can choose HDMI surround in setup and all channels work fine.
However Kodi does not allow me to choos passthrough option, it is not available in expert mode.
I've reviewed similar cases from the forum and found an information that it happens because Kodi during start does not recognize hardware properly.
I setup Pulseaudio according to this:
http://kodi.wiki/view/PulseAudio

but still no result.

I enable logging and start kodi (issue should be replicated during starting I guess), log is here:

http://xbmclogs.com/phvvy5k56

Could you please advice how to make this option available under Ubuntu?

I also tried to install openElec but after installation it cannot run as it reports some issue with X, so I decided to install Ubuntu instead.

Thanks and regards,
Lukasz

http://forum.kodi.tv/forumdisplay.php?fid=52 -> Just read here and don't install the Desktop. Both work OE 6.0-fritsch edition / Jarvis testing builds or the Ubuntu howto.

Hi fritsch!

Thanks you for your replay. However because I'm quite new here I'm afraid I do not understant correctly your answer -sorry for that but could you write few more words?
What do you mean by "Desktop"? What is the difference between the standard Ubuntu 15.10 and OE 6.0-fritsch edition / Jarvis testing builds? I need the "normal" Ubuntu with X, desktop, web browser because if I consider replacing windows with linux I need to run some other stuff on the machine.
Do you suggest to forward my issue to "Linux and Live support"?

Thanks in advanced!

Reread the wiki link you posted again. You now have pulse _in_ multichannel mode, that makes AC3, DTS, EAC3 unavailable. It's an either / or decision.

Remember: DTS-HD / TrueHD won't work with pulseaudio.

What also does not work with 15.10 Desktop Edition:
- Refreshrate switching
- 4k HEVC (without wsnipex ppa)
- HEVC acceleration at all won't work with Mainline 15.2

If you want to get most out of the system that you have - please read the thread I posted again, too.

OK, I think I get it now, I'll go with this thread:

http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=231955

as the link you posted brings me not to some particular thread but to the list of threads from "Linux and Live support"

EDIT:

Thanks @fritsch! according to your guide from mentioned thread I was able to setup kodi with passthrough option. Now I'm going to start test with some other persons to collect their feelings, let you know about the result.
However if I consider to stay with linux I must handle X, maybe install KDE...

I am now the proud owner of the 3150 version and I want to install the OpenElec Fritsch version onto a USB stick to run along side Windows 10 for needed for other systems.

Is there an easy way to select between OpenElec and Windows 10 on boot? Is there way to select the OS using a keyboard shortcut?

The primary boot device will probably be set to the SSD with Windows 10 on.

Thanks in advance.

If you have openelec on a USB stick. you can set in the bios the order or F12 on start to choose each time.
