Will KODI run my AVer Media A336 & also play DVDs?

Hi all.

Another 'moving to Win 10 and losing WMC' question - sorry.

My li'l Packard Bell all-in-one PC has a built-in AVer Media A336 DVB-T card and I can watch terrestrial digital TV in a resizeable window as I use the PC. I currently use Media Centre for this, as well as for playing DVDs.

My obvious Q is, will KODI do both these tasks for me when I lose WMC when I upgrade to Win 10?

Tbh, the only features I need are to watch a chosen terrestrial Freeview TV channel in a resizeable screen and to watch DVDs with ditto. I'm not really bothered about PVR or anything else.

Many thanks.

Kodi doesn't do live-tv on its own, it needs a pvr backend. Since you are moving to win10 you need to use a different backend then serverwmc/wmc. I suggest you check out the forum above this subforum.

Thanks Krusty.

Part of my issue is that I simply don't understand terms like 'backend', at least not in this context...

My PC has the DVB card fitted (as standard for this PC) and will presumably have the drivers for it installed too - I just need an 'interface' to control and display the TV like wot WMC does.

And ditto for playing DVDs.

I'll have a read through the forums and see if I can garner this info.

Many thanks, DA.

Kodi, by itself, does not record/play live-tv or get guide data (i.e. all the things you expect a pvr to do). So to get kodi to do pvr stuff, you have to have a pvr backend (which is just software like serverwmc / wmc) that does these functions for kodi - its this software that controls the tuners, records to disk, etc. Then a plugin inside of kodi talks to this backend which gives kodi all the necessary data/functions it needs for pvr. See: http://kodi.wiki/view/PVR for a lot more info.

One of the nice things about this setup is that you only have to have one machine running the pvr backend software, but you can have lots of kodi installs on different devices running as pvr clients - giving all these devices pvr functions.

As far as playing dvds, I'm pretty sure kodi will be able to do that on win10 without added software.
