I am using the latest stable versions of Ubuntu and kodi along with a 4tb external drive. Kodi shows my drive and will play files from it but it doesn't make it into a library with cover art and meta data. I've searched for a solution, being a noob to kodi, and all I can find are solutions to if your external drive isn't showing up. I've tried addint it as a new source as well and it doesn't show up in the new source window. I assume its because it is already listed.
Could someone please point me in the right direction?

Did you set a media type (tv or movies) and a scraper for that source? Context menu on the source gives you edit or settings option

I don't believe I did. That sounds like that is what I'm trying to figure out how to do. I'll see if I can see what you are referring to. Thank you.
