What machine to get
#1
hi everyone, first time posting here, been using kodi/xbmc for a long time and it's the best! Smile

I'm looking to replace my big, loud windows PC HTPC but am stumped on what too choose.

This is my current setup:

* Windows 8 pro "server" dishing out files too my network using standard windows shares..

* Most media is 1080p bluray rips in the 1gb to 6gb(6gb not very often)

* 100mb ethernet with wireless N 2.4ghz (AC soon)

The HTPC is:

* Windows 7 Ultimate
* 4gb DDR2
* GTX 550ti
* core 2 quad q6600
* NO Optical Drive
A 10 strip LightPack

The lightpack is the bottleneck here as the devs are lazy and it apparently does not work (screen grabbing) in android.

I'd like to go with something small things I've considered (Trying to get under $200 AUD):

Asus nexus player (android though :/)
Apple TV 1 with HD card, does the Apple TV1 support linux or openelec or more simply can I get my light pack working
intel based TV stick (windows 10)

or build a cheap AMD PC or find a matx or itx 775 mobo

thank you for reading and thanks in advance Smile

Just checked the latest OpenELEC 5.95.5 on my ATV1, and there is no Boblighttd addon available.

I also have an ODROID-C1+ ($37 USD) that I run OpenELEC 5.95.5 on as well (see my signature below). This has the Boblightd v6.0.0 addon, same as the one used in this thread:

As this is an AMlogic device, I also checked that the correct Kernel is used and it has the required Videocap support.(CONFIG_AM_VIDEOCAPTURE=y)
https://github.com/hardkernel/linux/blob..._defconfig

This is confirmed as well by /dev/videocap0 present as detailed here:

Boblight / Ambilight is also working on this platform with Ubuntu/Kodi:

An RPi2 would also be another option.
If you were sticking with Windows I would get a 4K HEVC capable - Braswell - ASRock Beebox, or just the ITX ASRock N3150 motherboard and maybe run a dual boot Win/OpenELEC on it. Please don't go down the AMD path.
You won't need to buy another media box for quite a while with this option.

Thanks for the info Smile
Whats bad about AMD?

I almost bought a mac mini 2006 (1st gen low spec) for $200 but ended up getting a DELL Optiplex 990, with shipping it came out too about $190 AUD.

The specs are:

Small Form factor, looks about the same height as the mac mini, a little wider and a little deeper.

Core i3 2120 @ 3.3Ghz
4GB DDR3

Only Displayport from the intel graphics but luckily the mobo has PCI-e x16 2.0

Now All I need is a low profile GPU

Tossing up over:

GT210
GT610 2gb
HD 6450 1gb
maybe R5 230

A GT 730 2GB looks the best option but is close to $100 here :/

Really only needs to have HDMI and smooth 1080p 60hz but if it can play some games like sims 3 thatd be good

thanks
