Have you seen the new Chromecast Audio device? Can kodi mimic one?

I am hoping that some clever person will be able to make an add on that makes Kodi mimic the new Chromecast Audio device.

It would be great to use my current Kodi clients instead of having to buy these to clutter up the area around my TVs!

Any thoughts?

I imagine it wouldn't be too hard. Install Kodi on a Raspberry Pi. Make it a UPnP receiver. Use another Kodi device (probably a tablet) send music to your Pi with the Play Using feature. Profit.

edit: Wasn't sure if play using worked with music. Just tested. Works fine. I'm also not sure if you can load Kodi on a Pi without a screen plugged in, but am not super pumped to test that out.

edit2: Absolutely worked. Launched the Pi (with all the UPnP settings already turned on) without a monitor plugged in, and with my headphones plugged into the audio jack. Played music to it. Heard music on my headphones.

edit3: Worked better with local music than internet music though. For some reason internet music caused the Kodi that was sending to crash.

Thanks for the response. But I actually want to open up google play music or TuneIn radio on my phone and cast to multiple devices and have them play music all synchronised together.

The Chromecast Audio can't actually do that yet. It's supposed to happen in an update. With that said, that's unfortunately not possible with Kodi today and would require far more code than an addon could accomplish. For one thing, Kodi can't act as a chromecast receiver, and that's likely never to change for the foreseeable future. For another thing, playing synchronized audio would require perfectly synchronized clocks, which is possible, but would require some work in Kodi's core code.

Damn but have to say that the now supported multi-room music syncronization feature with Chromecast Audio "casting" is awesome!

Any chance you could get get Kodi to send its music playback output to Chromecast Audio cast recievers on the network?

I see that there is a guy who posted a library for Python to communicate with Chromecast.

http://pypi.python.org/pypi/PyChromecast

http://github.com/balloob/pychromecast

pychromecast - Library for Python 2 and 3 to communicate with the Google Chromecast. It currently supports:
  • Auto discovering connected Chromecasts on the network
  • Start the default media receiver and play any online media
  • Control playback of current playing media
  • Implement Google Chromecast api v2
  • Communicate with apps via channels
  • Easily extendable to add support for unsupported namespaces
  • Multi-room setups with Audio cast devices
Not sure if anyone on the Kodi team have got a few Chromecast Audio yet but I stongly recommend it.

I have bought dongles so far and have them connected to active (computer) speakers around the house.

Chromecast Audio dongles have brought the possibility for simple and cheap multiroom music playback to the masses.

Since that is python then anyone could take a stab at making a addon to provide chromecast audio support.
