Questions for Developers @ #KodiDevcon2015
#31
We just ran through the bulk of the questions with the whole team (that are at devcon, that is) and I think zag or someone will summarize the answers. We can't post the video because people kept taking off their pants (viva la pant-less!), so we don't want to get into any trouble.

Feel free to keep asking, as we're only half way done with the conference.

Here you go, sorry if we couldn't answer everything but hopefully this helps.

Quote:- RERO releases working well, progress is quicker and Jenkins automatic building helps. Cleaner code without breaking stuff. Problems fixed quicker. Some developers auto updating to nightlies on their live setups, rare to see problems any more. Skinners OK with it although needs some effort to keep up with latest features. Rebasing much easier.

- Binary Add-ons - No interest from commercial companies so far. We are open to companies writing Add-ons. Potential problems with providing DRM or locked down content, but nothing blocking it.

- Unifying PVR. Some work done with recording tags so potentially can be scraped in the future. Some problems with providers numbering episodes properly. Certainly an area that can be improved now we have custom repeating timers.

- New default skin - Nothing to announce at this time. Its something that would be considered in the future.

- Retro player merging? - The input code needs to go in first. Scheduled for Alpha one v17. Retroplayer goes in at some point after that is done. No timescale yet.

- Any Exciting new features? Loads! but all code is usually on Github and freely available. Features are merged "when they are ready", RERO releases allow these to go in in smaller batches.

- XBMC Logs. Not our site, problems with some of the media links so best to keep it 3rd party. There is an (auto log uploader) as an add-on. Wont be part of Kodi.

- uPNP extra images like CDart? Not part of the spec, but we do a lot outside the spec so its possible. Really need to support these image types in the database first.

- Kore remote is open source, accepting patches. Currently designed to keep it basic. Other remotes have more features.

- Music Sets - Needs database improvements, Probably possible with Music Nodes already.

- Emby - Not in our current plans, needs to use the proper API's first. Happy to work with anything open-source.

- SteamOS Conversations have taken place with the company, quite restricted in its requirements so not much progress made.

- Advanced settings, Not in our plans, user interface needs to remain simple. Advanced settings are hidden for a reason.

It has been discuss a lot, actually, but it's a multi-step process. Think of it like putting together a TV show. Someone is working on the actors, someone is working on the sets, someone is working on the lighting. One day all of the parts will be there, and we will have a practical headless option, as this is very much desired by the group.

IMPORTANT:
The official Kodi version does not contain any content what so ever. This means that you should provide your own content from a local or remote storage location, DVD, Blu-Ray or any other media carrier that you own. Additionally Kodi allows you to install third-party plugins that may provide access to content that is freely available on the official content provider website. The watching or listening of illegal or pirated content which would otherwise need to be paid for is not endorsed or approved by Team Kodi.

here is my input

Merge multiple CDs into one volume eg acdc greatest hits cd1 AC/DC greatest hits cd2 But see only one album cover

Have the ability to create or add CD box sets .... Create custom collections Same way movie custom collections are handled but for audio CDs

This already happens if you tag your files properly.

Asked many times, can we have a GUI to make/adjust advancedsettings?
ps. when using profiles you have to copy advancedsettings to each profile folder.

Can you introduce a way to import settings from an external source? for example with exchange when connecting to a backend settings can be pushed to the client. It would be cool for example when connecting to a pvr addon, the proxy inbetween inserts a setting response (or adds a setting header), the kodi-pvr-user accepts them and viola the whole pvr addon is configured for best performance including the creation and setting of advancedsettings.

To keep Kodi current and users interested, it needs to start supporting animated PNG widgets/video interfaces and sub category videos and wipes. Would this be on the discussion agenda?

I believe this was recently merged but limited to 8 frames. Check latest nightly

Maybe I'm too late but was some kind of "first run wizard" discussed? For normal people it is very difficult to understand how kodi works and what they have to do to get these nice looking graphics and things.

Instead of searching and reading a Wiki (which hold of a lot of people), a first run wizard would made things much easier.

That's been discussed many times in the past and yes it would be nice.

It might also be a good way to inform the user about what Kodi really is and warn against 3rd party add-ons that may have been pre-installed.

Except of course for "pre-loaded" boxes where it would also really be nice, as the end-user would probably never get to see it. The vendor would see and dispose of it before the end-user ever got the chance to do so, as the first run would probably be the point where they add in all the piracy crap before snapshotting the image for duplication.

Would work to help out genuine new users with a fresh install, but I'm not sure that's where the bulk of the issue is (as they would be active installs rather than pre-installs of add-ons).
