OK does sound like a driver problem then.

RL and RR are always the extra channels (or more properly known as BL & BR) in a 7.1 channel map and should never be used for 5.1 output.

whats the verdict on 7.1 i've never upgraded as 5.1 seems enough for me but if its amazing would be nice to know (No hijack just a quick q)
