Complete system freeze
#1
Hi guys,

I have a serious problem with my nas running kodi right now.
It's a plain linux with just kodi and samba.
Some time after boot the whole system freeze.
I can't even connect to ssh.
Sometimes it takes 1 hour, sometimes a day and sometimes it freezes after one minute.
I can't see anything in the logs (kodi.log, syslog) at that time.
Only thing which makes me think it's kodi is that without kodi running the system doesn't freeze.

I have tried Debian stable, testing and Ubuntu 15.10.
The nas with kodi 14 and debian 8 has run for months without errors.

So please help me find the error that I can use this wonderful software again Smile

We cannot help you without a Debug Log
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

I'm waiting for the next crash and then I upload the logs.

/edit

log http://xbmclogs.com/pvgmdt882
old log http://xbmclogs.com/ps2qnbmgm

as I have to do a hard reset the old log is from freeze and the log is from the following reboot.

install a supported version from our PPAs and try again.
Or report to debian.

ok some more info:

debian stable - kodi from repo (14 I think) - stable
debian testing - kodi from source (15 branch) - freeze
ubuntu 15.10 - kodi from repo - freeze

I'll try the kodi ppa today but I have the suspicion that it's an hw error.
Memtest is ok btw.

It's an intel kernel bug, see: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=88012 add
Code:
intel_idle.max_cstate=1

to your /etc/default/grub kernel bootline and run sudo update-grub afterwards

Many thanks fritsch.
After a bit searching I understand the problem and hate intel for that shit.

I won't downgrade the kernel so I've set the cstate like you said.
But to 2 like in the bugtracker. For the moment there is no freeze - uptime 3hrs.
I also have flashed the latest bios and will try to set some different states.
Temperature is at 45°C - 50°C under load (movie) so I think that's ok.

So thanks again and let's hope intel will fix it sometime.

/edit uptime > 1 day with cstate = 2 and moderate temp.
strange that powertop says c1 ~ 1% | c6 ~ 90%
