Fire TV not capable of 100+ mbps - only 10/100 port?!?!
#1
WTF?!!? I just realized this morning after upgrading my modem the Fire TV Box cannot exceed 100 Mbps. I can't be the only one annoyed and surprised by this. Luckily, my router is 5ghz, but it seems silly to choose wifi over ethernet, especially after spending LOTS of time hardwiring my home.

So for now, of course I'm going to use 5 ghz; I'll just have an empty ethernet port and hopefully the next version of the box has 10/100/1000.

You'll be lucky to get more than 100Mbs over WiFi. But why is it important? Even untouched Blu-rays max out at 50Mbs. 100Mbs Ethernet is fine for a media player... GigE is only really relevant for fast file transfers (not playback) Raspberry Pi 2 (which is one of the favourited platforms for Kodi) only has 100Mbs network connectivity too.

I guess I'm more annoyed I can't take full advantage of my cat6 cabling and new modem giving me speeds of 170 Mbps. I could use the faster speed for various addons. And actually, I just tested the 5 ghz, and I got 150+ speed, so I'm good I suppose.

lol, please show me an addon providing content at a 100+mbps bitrate. It's a complete non-issue for anything other than file transfers or speed tests.

There's no addon ( legal or pirated material) that has 4K 128Mbps streams, the only thing that would kill a normal 10/100 connection and would require Gigabit hard-wire. 4K 128Mbit/s being the maximum that UHD Blu Rays will support.

Silicon Dust's HDHome Run Prime tuner for encrypted CATV runs better with Gigabit Ethernet....believe me....wireless and 10/100 does not always handle it very well and I have other devices running on my Gigabit LAN but for all other stuff Fast Ethernet is OK. That was a deal breaker on the Fire TV for me....I use a Beelink Intel box with Gigabit Ethernet and no problems at all. Why they don't supply the faster Ethernet is really stupid since the cost is negligible....

Even discarding availability, I somewhat doubt the aftv would be able to handle 100+mbits video files...
Did someone tried a sample from local storage?

I have checked 120/140/160//180/200/400Mbps Jellyfish HEVC main10 files on Amazon Fire TV 2. It played OK with 120,140 & 160Mbps. Beyond that, it started to slowdown. At 400Mbps, it almost took three times more to playback the clip. The 140Mbps one also has Dolby TrueHD audio and that was decoded to LPCM. It did have some audio glitches.

Here is a debug log for the 200Mbps one: http://xbmclogs.com/p13edvfir

Does this mean that it was rendered in 2160p?

The cost of CAT5e and CAT6 cabling is minimal, so it is better to just install CAT6 from the start. Not to mention the trouble of installing the cable.
