Based on the Kodi keyboard shortcut keys in the thread below,
is there no shortcut to go directly to settings?

How do I access "Settings" and "File Manager" and such in the middle of playing a moive (Playback)?

Do I go into "Windowed" mode and at that point the "contextual menu" will appear at the bottom of the screen and
then I would have to use the mouse to click on one of the buttons there to navigate to "Settings" etc?

Try hitting the backspace key a few times while watching a movie, should bring you back to the home screen and the settings [the film will still be playing in the background]. Or perhaps I misunderstood?
