use divx/xvid instead of avc and it will play with the dvdplayer decoder at the same resolution in xbmc. prefered is plugh's modification to xvid codec to keep under the limits of the xbox

1. do your encodes with xvid/divx at 1280x540 Original Aspect Ratio. Preferable with Plugh's modified xvid codec which handles the Xbox limitations. Search and you'll find a thread about this (too lazy to search for you - learn it)
2. When playing xvid/divx hd encodes which were not done with Plugh's modified codec, use the built in dvd player decoder instead of the default mplayer, as it's much faster. You do this by selecting the container (avi/mvk etc) and press the white button, choose "play using..." and then "dvd player"

hehe noone ever said things should be easy. if you want easy then stick to the original media. xbmc linux might be your road as it will, with the right hardware, play your current files
