Stuttering 4k playback - Intel NUC Ubuntu
#1
After going through some other problems with my new installation of Kodi on top of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS on my Intel NUC 5PPYH I'm in the meanwhile almost happy with the setup. Although not a priority obviously I cannot seem to get 4K playback to work smoothly. I downloaded BBB_sunflower_2160p_30fps_normal for testing purposes. I'm aware that 60fps playback will not be supported on this machine, but 30fps should be easily supported.

As soon as I start the movie I can see massive amount of skipped frames although the CPU utilization is very low (around 15% maybe). Needless to say this results in low fps, stuttering and an unwatchable experience.

I already played around with various combinations of HW acceleration setting (pure guessing trial and error) to no avail. Adjust display refresh rate is ON, sync playback to display is OFF, VDPAU is OFF, VAAPI is ON.

I hope this is a simple Ubuntu noob error and an easy fix. Here is the debug log: https://paste.ubuntu.com/23172301/

Thank you very much for your help!

It's not meant to work on your device in v16 Jarvis. This has suboptimal vaapi support. More technical: Every 4k surface needs to be copied from decode to renderstage (vaPutSurface), it's not possible to properly playback 4k material. Check a Milhouse LE build to see what I mean.
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

Really? Is this a limitation of Ubuntu, Jarvis or the hardware? Because according to this review http://nucblog.net/2015/08/braswell-nuc-...yh-review/ and a few others this exact machine should have no problems whatsoever with the playback of 4K material in h264 and 30fps?

Also - forgive me, but what is a Milhouse LE build, and how/what am I supposed to do with it?

It's a Jarvis Limitation: Read the intro: http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=231955

Milhouse is a Team Kodi member. LE means Libreelec (which is a stripped down Linux OS + kodi) Test builds for Libreelec with Kodi 17 Krypton can be found in this thread http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=269815

Libreelec can be installed and run from a USB stick so you can compare.

I think @fritsch was saying it's a Jarvis limitation but I'll stand corrected if wrong Smile
