(Your conclusion) 'Yes' that's correct, The scraper looks on the movie database of choice (That's your choice of scraper, some do better than others, and some databases can be weighted towards, anime, cartoons, oriental etc) and tries to match your title up with one of their listings... of course if the movie has a name of 'Starwars4K6.1encodedbyme-ratedbad' it's not going to find much, but might offer you choices if it's single manual scrape, otherwise it's either going to pick wrong or pass it up. While a title 'Start Wars (1984)' is not going to confuse the scraper.
TheRenamer gets it's proper names from most of the popular database, and has much more complex searching routines (uses google) and if you've dragged the entire folder over the accessory files like .srt and graphics are at the same time, it should be handled. Test it out... Once you have renamed the titles like this scraping becomes a simple action. Keep in mind scrapers will pull in graphics, so delete them anyway, The sub titles are usually handled and renamed at the same time and the folder usually gets a date.
While TV shows are easier, drag and drop without regard to location, the naming has to be more precise, and in that regard, cross checking the name of the series is useful.
https://thetvdb.com/?tab=advancedsearch or in rare circumstances changing the meta-database helps. If you're stuck on one that isn't scraping let us know and we'll see what's to be done. Keep in mind all the specs, res, format, and all the goodies you want to know are coming from the scraper and included within the Kodi interface, don't use the title for useless information.
This may seem to be a lot of work to maintain a library, but someone has to do it and there are compensations
