How to make a keyboard behave like... a keyboard
#1
Right, I've trawled the forums and the internet in general and I have been unable to find anything to help with this.

I have kodi installed on raspbian (yes I know other distros exist for using kodi which are more streamlined, no they don't meet my needs, yes I am sure that this is the setup I want).

Currently, the keyboard presses are recognised by Kodi but they all reference shortcuts, even when focused on a textbox or with the virtual keyboard onscreen. This is Undesireable Behaviour as far as I am concerned, and I would prefer to be able to type into the textboxes, even if this sacrifices keyboard shortcuts.

Is there a way to set this up?

As an alternative, try kore for typing in textboxes.

However I don't think what you are seeing is normal kodi behaviour. When a textbox is focused, it should ac6t as a keyboard in my experience.
If I have helped you or increased your knowledge, click the 'thumbs up' button to give thanks :) (People with less than 20 posts won't see the "thumbs up" button.)

Thanks for your response.

Kore is, unfortunately, not an option for everyone using the device, though it would be a good solution if I was the only family member using it.

Interesting that this is not normal Kodi behaviour, since it's a default setup. I'll try with a different keyboard to see if that helps.

Any further advice on how to fix what is apparently a problem would be appreciated.

Does it work when launching kodi as root?

I think it may be a permissions issue. See:

Did you set an udev rules to give the necessary permissions for Kodi ? It is generally needed on Raspbian.

Check the permissions part on this link:

Sadly, the various permissions are all configured correctly and this does not fix this issue. To reiterate; the keypresses are recognised, but they are not treated as alphanumeric characters for typing text, they simply trigger shortcuts.

The kodi package is launched as the pi user, as kodi-standalone.
