Here are a couple of tips to students where to find existing feature requests and already fleshed out suggestions for new functions for Kodi that been repeatable asked for before;
Other than the Team-Kodi proposal ideas on that GSoC 2017 wiki page, the first tip is the Feature Request forum found => http://forum.kodi.tv/forumdisplay.php?fid=9
However one big downside to Feature Request forum is that got a huge amount of threads/posts, and many threads are have the same ideas or posts are not really fleshed out.
That leaves the second tip on where to find idea, which I think is better, and that is the development forum and more specifically GSoC subforums for the previous years:
Other than the ideas that will be posted here in the GSOC 2017 subforum, you should really check out the ideas and proposals that did not get picked up:
