I am running kodi 17.01 on ubuntu 16.04 and macbook. I have audio but no video on both computers. I have searched and found out that I can fix it by choosing the software option on render method but Software option doesn't appear.

I am having this same issue with Kodi version 17.01 in Ubuntu 17.04.
I have tried the two possible combinations of rendering, with the three possible combinations of (no acceleration), VAAPI, VDPAU.
In all cases without success. Video playback starts, but the screen never changes, and audio corruption soon follows.
I believe I have all required packages installed.
I have tried also with builds from latest (at this time) from git with the same effect. The last version I had working was 15 Isengard, which I cannot build on 17.04 for various annoying library related reasons 8(
