[MAC] Support for Mac OS X File / Directory / Folder / Disk Finder Alias translation?

Sweet. One of the disadvantages with using symlinks is that it uses absolute paths. So if you change the name of the original file or change its location the link will be broken and the symlink stops working. This doesn't happen with Aliases but I guess they have their own disadvantages so I guess it would be good for people to have the choice of which one they'd rather use.

zondajag Wrote:BTW does xbmc support aliases in Mac OS X? I'm having login issues connecting to an smb share from a windows 7 computer whilst on this mac. I was thinking of just pointing xbmc to an alias (active shortcut) of the share and letting the OS deal with the smb login stuff instead. Unfortunately I cant seem to access aliases in xbmc on this mac, I keep on getting a Lock settings dialog :/

Apparently the main problem is on the side of the PC and has something to do with the live sign in assistant adding some extra restrictions to how smb passwords are dealt with, the fix was to install and uninstall the sign in assistant but as thats now no longer available from Microsoft and the same feature is now built into other things (like games for windows) the fix wont work anymore.
Apparently the newer versions of samba correct this issue (as samba in Mac OS X works fine) but I am unsure if xbmc uses samba natively (through the OS) or with its own utility built into xbmc.

aliases should work, that was added a few months ago.

XBMC uses an internal smbclient and the issue with windows live assistant showed up too late to make any fixed appear in Dharma. However, since you do have native SMB via OSX, just mount your SMB drives at the OSX level and point XBMC to them.

Yeh I do that now. I was about to say the problem is in non- PPC versions of xbmc for mac as well but you beat me to it. I guess its something to look forward to for future updates. Smile
Aliases to SMB shares are invisible when browsing im afraid. I was hoping to not have to attach the network drive manually every time but I guess I can just wait for the SMBclient to get a fix instead
