Thanks for the reply. I definitely know I'm far from the only one who uses Kodi but not for the library. For example, Kodi has some audio and subtitle capabilities that other players don't offer. Also, when researching if it was possible to simply show a list of file names on the home page (if you don't care about all the metadata and graphics of the library) I found many other users seeking and asking about the same thing going back years. So, yeah, there definitely are plenty of Kodi users who use it for various capabilities it offers but don't actually care about the library. For example, work videos, speeches, conference vids, travel vids sent by friends, etc etc etc. There are tons on videos that users will only watch once then delete and that aren't something that can easily be added to the library anyway. Yet, it would obviously still be extremely helpful to be able to partially watch those videos and resume them later.

Yes, I have learned that Kodi now resumes non-library files; although only if the file has been playing more than 180 seconds... which is why I didn't initially realize it was working. But, as you say, that does nothing if there is a crash. Or a power outage... which is definitely a thing when using Kodi on an Android/Google TV which doesn't run on battery. Also, Kodi apparently only sets a resume point when you stop the video... so, if you just pause the video then don't get back to it before power saving settings or someone else in the house turns off the TV then you also lose your place. In other words, there are a variety of scenarios where it would be helpful to also have your auto-save functionality on non-library files. Thanks in advance if you can make that happen.

Seems to work well for me here, so I have pushed the changes to the Kodi master repo for general release.
Addons I wrote &/or maintain:
OzWeather (Australian BOM weather) | Check Previous Episode | Playback Resumer | Unpause Jumpback | XSqueezeDisplay | (Legacy - XSqueeze & XZen)
Sorry, no help w/out a
*full debug log*.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner. For some reason, there was no notification of your post from the 8th that referenced my username. Does using "@username" on this forum not generate a notification to the user like it does on some other forums? Anyway, thanks for the info and coding the update. Since you've pushed the changes to the Kodi master repo for general release does that mean that if it's approved for inclusion, it will become a standard feature and therefore no longer require the addon? If so, can you either update here when that happens and/or provide a link to the Github PR so interested users can monitor its progress? Thanks again!

No, it just means it will become a released part of this addon.

Installed 2.0.6 and initially it was throwing an error. I had a suspicion it might be because I was still running the Release Candidate version of Omega. Looked at the log and discovered an error related to converting the version number from integer to floating point. Which obviously errors if the version isn't just a number... in this case the version has "RC" in it. As expected, after updating to the final release version of 21 the error went away. Just wanted to let you know in case you wanted recode it in a way that would avoid the problem in the future. Otherwise, for anyone else reading this to know the error will resolve if they don't use a version of KODI that has anything other than just numbers in its version.
As far as I can tell it does seem to be working properly. I played a video, let it run a couple minutes, then exited out of Kodi. Since the stop button was never pressed (which is what Kodi's default method of setting a resume point requires) the fact that I was able subsequently resume the video indicates to me that this addon must be working. Thanks again bossanova808.

Thanks for testing. Good point about the RC in the string, will fix that.
