Solved Slow UI right from the start - Desktop runs smoothly (RPiOS, RPi 4, Kodi 18.7)
#1
Question
I'm using Kodi 18.7 (installed via "sudo apt install kodi") on an up to date Raspberry Pi OS on a Raspberry Pi 4 (Model B, 4 GiB RAM). The Pi is connected via 1 Gb/s ethernet. The only peripheral is a Bluetooth remote.

When I launch Kodi right after the installation the UI feels extremely unresponsive (about 3 fps). I didn't add any sources and left the configuration to its default.
Other desktop applications (Chromium with youtube) perform as fast as expected.

Is there some hardware acceleration to be installed/configured? Do I have to make some special settings to make Kodi run on an RPi 4?

Searching the internet for "slow Kodi UI" mainly brings up scam pages, playback issues and outdated information.

Thanks for your help.

What memory split have you got set up between the CPU and the GPU?

Kodi needs a minimum of about 160MB, and 320MB is recommended for a 4GB Pi4.

To check/set that, open "raspi-config" -> "Advanced Options" -> "Memory Split" -> 320. You can use either the command line or the GUI version of the app under Raspbian.

Yay! Thanks a lot for the quick help. Split was set to a weird low value (76 MB? IIRC). Upping to 320 MB brings everything back to normal.

Actually 256 MB should be fine as well, but I guess things work for you now.
