Xorg only without GDM vs. GDM and fluxbox
#1
I always wondered what are the advantages/ need of having GDM and fluxbox (or any other window manager) in case the computer is only used as HTPC.

I mean, I experienced XBMC is running fine if only xorg installed and XBMC started from .xinitrc, but even XBMC Live (which is for dedicated HTPC) is using Fluxbox if I know correctly.

So my question is, do we have any drawback having only xorg installed without GDM&desktop manager over having also GDM&window manager as well?

I think that Fluxbox is just used for convenience.

Power users like us don't mind having no GUI when things go wrong, the standard user setting up a
media server will freak the hell out when xbmc crashes and he can't click on something.
