[LINUX] Loud noise when playing DTS-WAV in XBMC for Linux
#1
I can't seem to play DTS music, but movies with DTS play without any issues.
I read somewhere in the wiki that DTS-WAV was never outputed as DTS on the original XBOX, but i hardly think this is related, right?

I'm using the SPDIF output to my receiver.

I have seen this as well. I have some DTS-WAV which I can stream to my receiver using a Roku SoundBridge - receiver says it's DTS and plays it well. Same files through XBMC on AppleTV don't work for me - just noise. It is as though there is some scaling or other modification taking place. Volume of XMBC output is set to max (= 0.0dB) which I thought might eliminate the problem - but no.

As a relative noob in XBMC and AppleTV land, I figure I maybe just need to read some more regarding the SPDIF support.

Im rather new to the hole SACD/Audio codecs in general thing, so im goning to ask a dumb question (maybe):

If i convert these files to multichannel FLAC would this change anything?

This doesn't seem to be a Linux issue just try following command and you will hear multichannel music:

Code:
aplay -Dspdif file.wav

I've also tried renaming the files to .dts but nothing just a loud noise much like it's described here:

Code:
But this trick does not work with analog connection and portable CD players: we will get terribly loud noise instead of nice music. Because of this CD disks with AC3/DTS tracks are relatively rare.

Hi there,
today my speakers finally arrived and i was so happy to test them with several DTS-Wavs.

I ran into them same problem. The only thing that helped was creating an audiocd with the dts-wav. The created CD works perfect. Although i would like to see a kind of fix here Big Grin

No debug logs?

As far as I understand it problem is with pulse audio which is not able to pass through the signal to DTS enabled receiver. This is why using mplayer (or something else that can do passthrough) you can play same file just fine.

What I don't understand is how xbmc is able to play DTS movies correctly (which I guess it needs to decode the signal) but it is not able to decode DTS wav file.

Maybe someone with more knowledge on that topic can explain (topfs2 Smile )

thx

Hi there.

Meanwhile i found out that this does not seem to be a xbmc related problem here.

There is something wrong with the sample rate.
everything thet is 48kHz seems to work. But the DTS-Wav is used was 44100 and that created the noise.
Not sure how to solve this, maybe someone has a hint.

How come i was available to play my files with aplay, then?

Here's my debug log:

http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/110458/

The interesting part is around 21:40.

Seems like the xbox doesn't play 44100hz dts wavs. But i don't see why this wouldn't work under linux?

Just a note. This (DTS-Audio CD's) does not work on the Windows build either so the issue lies somewhere in the main code.

EDIT: Forgot to mention these same files play perfectly with XBMC for XBOX

Well thats extremely weird because the XBOX shouldn't be available to play DTS-music since it isn't 48kHz.

There is loads of threads about the DTS issue on XBOX, and we have a great explantion to that problem however this is not hardware or operating system issues.

Anyway heres some samples from public radio in sweden:

http://www.sr.se/laddahem/multikanal/dts...ForLau.zip // 322Mb
http://www.sr.se/laddahem/MultiKanal/Dts...011212.zip // 14Mb

If i play these files i only get a loud noise. In aplay they play just fine.

I should note that for the longest time the original xbox needed the files to be renamed with .dts to play but in the last few years i have not even bothered and they play them just fine regardless of the extension (.wav .dts)

That is why it was such a shock when i tried to play those same files on XBMC for windows that all i got was the pink noise. I ran right out and tested it on the XBOX and all was well.

I'm having the same exact problem. Just upgraded to a Zotac Zbox and all dts wav (or even 5.1 flac) files that played perfect on my xbox with xbmc
will not play on this Zbox. DTS wav doesnt play at all (white noise) and 5.1 FLAC gets downmixed to 2 ch stereo. Does the command that spozen posted work? I'm new to linux and dont even know how to try it.

Just found the solution on another thread. Play these files with DVD Player instead of the default player.
