I upgraded launcher to version 2.3, then xbmc to bf1, and finally boxee to the new beta. I was using boxee then all of the sudden it acted like it was sending the up key constantly. I pulled the power cord and now when it boots up the remote won't respond at all. I see the white light on the front go from white to orange, so I know its getting the command. It's been a long time since I've used my aTV but I think I'm on OS version 2.2.

sounds like your remote is paired/unpaired and the appletv is ignoring it.

unpair the remote.

Thanks for the amazingly quick response! That did the trick! I was stumped on how to unpair the remote without the menu, but nothing a quick google search couldn't fix! For anyone who sees this in the future.

To unpair a remote: Hold down menu and previous for 6 seconds (until you see a remote with two links of a chain not connected)
