The build referenced here crashes on my system immediatly after startup, even after uninstalling everything and removing all settings. What is the minimal version I can use? Do you have any other version I could try?

You might try this build. The build referenced above is already a bit old.

Though it might be helpful if you mentioned whether you run XP or Vista.

Good point, Hitcher. It reminds me of two suggestions. First, update video driver. Second, has everything been deleted from the following folder?

C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Roaming\XBMC\userdata

I'd avoid doing that second one until after doing the first one.
