tearing with latest svn and 9.10
#1
I've had to reinstall my system to cure a problem so I thought I'd try ubuntu 9.10 and the latest svn build. I'm getting tearing about one fifth of the way down the screen no matter what the source file is (xvid and mkv tested). I've tried both todays beta drivers and 185.18.29 with no joy.

Sorry if this is a known bug, I have searched and can't find any reference to it.

Log doesn't say you have vsync on, I suggest you should try that first.

Sorry bobo1on1 I've always left it so the driver chooses... I've just tried it with vertical blank sync always enabled with no noticeable change.... Here's the debug log:

did you try disabling vsync?

Yep, I've now tried with all the different vsync options... All I can say is that I think it looked worse with vsync off.

Disable the X composite extension.

Thanks bobo,
I've added
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection
to the end of my xorg.conf and that's cleared up the problem with the tearing... unfortunately it's caused some problems with gdm and gnome... best way I can describe it is it's like a quarter of the screen doesn't refresh from time to time Sad

I had the same problem. Installed karmic RC1 with nvidia 190.45 and saw tearing in all videos. I solved the problem by setting my vertical refresh rate to 60Hz. In /etc/X11/xorg.conf, add:

Option "VertRefresh" "60"

to the Device section. I also enabled Vsync in XBMC. No more tearing, looks fantastic now!
