Help Me Go Live!

I bought a new computer from Walmart. It features 9 USB ports, 5 of which are on the front. Also on the front is integrated SD, MMC, MS, MSPRO, and a CF reader. This machine screamed media center to me when I saw it, so I purchased it for the sole purpose of going live with XBMC

I brought it home and cracked the case .My first impression is that this machine is WAAAY more then worth it. Tthere are no PCI slots and the machine comes with two 1gig memory cards filling the memory slots. It could, however, be upgraded with a faster AMD processor. Also, there is a MMC port inside for upgrading audio, network, or modem, but you need the 1/2 din size. This machine is built to be rugged, the chassis does not flex like my PC, it feels very sturdy. I replaced the stock green 5mm LED with a blue one.

It came with Windows 7 pre-installed. It also has a partition with the 7 install disk pre-installed. I did not want to destroy my first copy of Windows 7, so I partitioned the 360 Gigabyte hard drive.

Word to the wise, shrink a partition and do nothing else with it. Boot from the CD you downloaded Partition 4 should be deleted when you run the install of ubuntu. Reformat it using the something 3 or something 4 (i can't remember the file system name now but it's the only one that has 1 2 3 and 4 options). Then when you install ubuntu it will create the rest of the

I tried initially to install XBMC from this link http://sourceforge.net/projects/xbmc/fil...p/download but I couldn't get it to work. So I googled and downloaded Jaunty Jackalope http://releases.ubuntu.com/jaunty/ubuntu...-amd64.iso from that link and then followed the directions on this page http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=HOW-TO_insta...Step_Guide

This is important, follow the directions on this page to set up administrator rights on your ubuntu machine http://www.watchingthenet.com/ubuntu-tip...-menu.html

This is my first time using Ubuntu (or any Linux for that matter). I am currently writing this from Firefox running on Ubuntu. I managed to set up my firefly remote to work with XBMC by following the directions on this page http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=31546 But I still have no idea what sudo or 1/2 of the other commands do.

I've got a couple of problems.
  1. I don't know where the log file is located for troubleshooting purposes.
  2. I am having extended delays when using the SMB functions.
  3. I also need assistance installing the repo installer / automatic upgrader because my version came with no scripts.
  4. Ubuntu seems to run slower then windows.

I would really like some help with these 3 issues. I've come very far and I need a little push towards the finish line of going fully live.
