Sorry this is a long rant/rave but my simple Q is..
How do I actually install the Nvidia Ion 190.53 updates? and
check that they are being used by XBMC?

Thanks to this guide I was able to install XBMC Live v9.11 on my new Aspire Revo 1600.

I played a few movies and was very happy.

However I quickly realized that it was a bit less than "full featured" in the way of a Linux Desktop/GUI. Ideally I wanted a browser and some way to easily DL other files and a simpler interface to install plugins/programs, managed files..etc...

So I read a bit and decided to install Ubuntu...later following this guide
[LINUX] XBMC Ubuntu PPAs (precompiled builds) to get XBMC.

After a few miss-starts due to the lack of a CDROM and some crazy unetbootin loops, I finally realized I should DL the Netbook remix version...I setup a two partition dual boot system one direct to the XBMCLive and the other to the new Ubuntu desktop....finally I had my first new OS since moving from DOS -> Windows 3.1.

I then managed to add PPA for XBMC for Linux and install XBMC....course I had already read

Note: For VDPAU users , you need to have NVidia 190.42 drivers to use a full featured VDPAU. Use the following PPA to get the drivers for your distribution.

So I added that Source and PPA and tried to install the Nvidia Drivers.

Finally started XBMC from within Ubuntu....started BUT:

It's dying, painfully slow to respond, mouse/keyboard is darn near inoperable....stuttering to the point of inoperative....ending XBMC and Ubuntu runs fine again.

My Windows experience tells me that is often either:
a) old drivers or
b) CPU/Memory

re: a...I spent hours trying to figure out how to DL the 190.53 drivers...from Nvidia Vdpau Team PPA....I also can't find a way to "check" which driver my system is using? this seems SO much easier in Windows?

It is also possible to add the gnome gui to your live installation.

Basic setup:
1) Keep live autostart
sudo apt-get install gnome-core firefox
2) Normal login
sudo apt-get install gdm gnome-core firefox


This will get you going. Then you will need to add other stuff you want.

nautilus-share -share a folder by righ click
apport-gtk
jockey-gtk
usplash
update-manager
notify-osd
update-notifiers
network-manager-gnome
fast-user-switch-applet
brasero
gnome-nettool
gdebi - offline package manager



Themes etc
gnome-screensaver
ubuntu-artwork human-theme tangerine-icon-theme gnome-themes-ubuntu xcursor-themes

I was able to install the drivers (I think) but it is still insanely slow?
I now receive this msg when I install the drivers

I run the system monitor while running XBMC, it looks like the CPUs are maxed alternating one then the other?

Failing everything harryzim suggested I tried going back to my XBMC Live partion, it still runs verry well.

I tried

sudo apt-get install gnome-core firefox 


But that failed and the msg suggested
sudo apt-get install gnome-desktop-data

that worked or at least installed something...

But I failed with

sudo apt-get install firefox 


something about using

sudo apt-get install firefox-3.5 


That failed several times due to "dependencies" and other...so did all the other apps in your list either "didn't exist" or some dependency problem..

OMFG I fixed it myself

I searched and searched these forums and struck out

But there were clues scattered here and there

Basically before finding firefox I needed to run

sudo apt-get update 


There was a confirmation then that ran for a few minutes

then

sudo apt-get install update-manager 


confirmation Yes again
that ran even longer and changed hundreds of files

Finally

PHP Code:

sudo apt-get install firefox3.5 


Looked good!!!

Then I found it with a right click under Applications:Network:Web Browsing:Firefox

good information! I was looking at adding "bits" to my live setup for the same reason. Has the bootup times changed much? I still plan on using the USB pen as the storage so I dont want to hammer it too much.
