I have been using my ATV for a couple of years and today I have a problem. I turn on my system and it boots to the main menu as always. But now when I try to navigate to select XBMC, or anything nothing happens. I know my remote is working as I have unplugged the ATV plugged the power back in and when the language choice screen appears I use my remote to select 'English' and at the next screen select reboot with the remote.
I did notice that when the ATV boot screen starts, after reconnecting the power, I do not hear any sound!
I have not changed anything and just do not know what to do next.
I appreciate any help.

I'm confused, are you saying after the atv boots, you don't have any IR remote control ? What other plugins are you running ? Did you update any recently ?

I did transfer some files to an external USB HDD attached to the ATV via Filezilla. I have not used Filezilla before and was trying it to see if the transfer speed would improve over Tunnelier.

I also uninstalled from my window 7 laptop the filezilla client.

"Nitotv, to get the USB alive", I remember something about a version of NitoTV that borks the startup audio. Also check (ssh in and do a 'ps aux') if XBMCHelper is running.

I had installed a version of nitotv to enable usb support and also lost my startup audio and it also made my atv completely unstable with regularly lock ups occurring.

I was too lazy to diagnose what had happened and just this past weekend reinstalled a fresh version of atv o/s 2.4 and xbmc and it seems to be stable again.

i plan on enabling usb support manually without nitotv in the future

If the LED is flashing amber, you need to unpair the remote.
