Shuttle XS35
#16
For the promise of a totally fanless system I can dig that price without ram/HDD. Still looking like a great bit of kit to me.... the 1.8Ghz processor is a nice touch too....

EDIT: just watched that video, very cool! Also forgot you get Wi-Fi baked into this unit, the think the price tag is more than reasonable. Bring it on ASAP please Shuttle! Smile

narf... since i've heard about this system, i google around for it every day to find a distributor Smile yeah i'am crazy Big Grin

some new information:

for the people who cant read german, here some points of the article:

release date with ion chipset :07/2010
release date with gma chipset : 08/2010

Price 350 Euro with RAM, HDD and Optical drive (dont know which system, how much of RAM or HDD, and i think only DVD drive)

Here some Information in english for french market:

Quote:Nettops are getting more and more powerful and capable with the new range of processors from Intel, although they are still very far off from being a suitable desktop. Shuttle's XS35 is able to hold the fort pretty well though, being first introduced at CES earlier this year, sporting a dual core Atom D510 processor not to mention the next generation ION graphics chipset from NVIDIA. What makes the XS35 even more special is the fact that it does not contain a fan, making it even smaller than usual, while an empty 5.25" drive bay lets you slip in a Blu-ray drive if you want to. Other ports include HDMI out, five USB 2.0 ports, VGA and LAN. Bringing home the Shuttle XS35 isn't going to be a cheap affair though, as we're looking at a 320 Euro price tag sans RAM, storage or optical drive when it hits France this September

320€ w/o optical drive, hard disk and RAM ... that's a bit expensive, but still much less than the new Mac Mini's 800€.

So, assuming I want to build a silent box to stream content from a NAS and read the occasional DVD, a rough estimation would be :

- slim DVD : 30€
- 2 GB RAM : 50€
- 32 GB SSD : 120€
- Harmony 600 Remote + USB IR adapter : 100€

That's 620€ for the whole setup.

Alternately, to lower the price, I could put in a silent 160 GB, 5400 RPM HDD like Samsung's Spinpoint M5S for 50€, and get the Hauppage MCE instead of the Harmony for 40€, bringing the price just below 500€.

How would you build a XS35 HTPC?

Press release the other day on Shuttle's US site. Renamed the X350. It looks like the first launch in the US will be with the ION D510...

http://us.shuttle.com/News.aspx#100622

"The X350 will be available for ordering on the Shuttle website starting this week."

I get confused with all the model number changing. This is the same box yes?

According to this link, it's the same box. For Europe market it is XS35 and for the U.S. it is X350

Seems the US order site for the american X350 model is finally up!

http://us.shuttle.com/X350.aspx

Seems most of the info from that Hexus.tv interview I posted earlier was wrong, the processor is still the 1.6Ghz Atom D510 (DDR2 ram as opposed to DDR3) and MSRP of 299 apparently didn't hold either. Starting price is at 399 which is a bit pricey since I presume it's without the all-important Nvidia Ion graphics. The system does come with ram, hdd and optical drive though (but no OS which suits me fine btw Smile).

Too bad I'm stuck in europe and we usually get the short end of the stick when it comes to new hardware releases Wink.

"GRAPHIC CARD Integrated Intel GMA 3150 (With VGA Output) / Nvidia ION2 w/ X350 Ion Model" especially as the nvidia 1080p graphics is always referred to as "optional"

I don't get that either... 399 for the Ion2 system would be okay though

what I don't understand is why so few systems are sold as barebone, the shuttle would be an ideal candidate (that's what I really appreciate about the foxconn netbox but the fan control is still a problem)
OpenElec Standalone --> Asus Chromebox 'Panther' --> Onkyo TX-NR709 --> Sony 55" X85C Android TV (also with Kodi!)
Asus Chromebox EZ Script
Kodi on Sony Bravia Android TVs

I wish they had waited for the upcoming Atom N550, since that's a N-series (netbook) Atom with a TDP of only 8.5 Watts, which means it runs much cooler than the D-series D510 (desktop cpu, TDP 13 Watts).

/sigh. You gotta be kidding me. I've honestly been looking forward to this since early June, and held off on Apple's latest offerings thinking Shuttle's HTPC was just around the corner. We're well on our way to late August, and I haven't heard anything!

Is there ANY information on whether an actual XS35 will go into production and be available, or was Shuttle just dicking us around? I could have sworn I remember TONS of people getting so excited for this system back in June, and hearing phrases from the well-informed that "It'll be out by the end of this month [June] or next month [July]."

Anybody know what the hold up is?

I was looking forward to the availability of the barebones XS35-701 model for around $175: http://www.directron.com/xs35701.html
It would have been the ideal unit for my needs since it is very small, fanless, yet supports an optical drive. I already have a 30GB SSD and slot-load DVD drive, so all I would have needed to purchase in addition to the barebones unit would be a stick of SO-DIMM RAM.

However, I found the BIOS setup manual for the XS35 here: http://global.shuttle.com/download03.jsp?PI=1423&PL=3
The user selectable options are extremely rudimentary (set date/time, password, boot device order and not much else). I am most disappointed in the lack of power management options. As such, I have no assurance I will be able to suspend/resume from S3 or set a wake-up time via rtcwake. These are deal-breakers for me.

Sigh.. back to the drawing board.

I'm beginning to think it's the latter, judging by shuttle.eu's activity on twitter:

Quote:
heldchen @shuttle_europe now with the contest out of the way, are you going to send the xs35gt to europe stores? :-p #needit #desperate

shuttle_europe @heldchen Probably phase three. Patience is a virtue, especially when buying XS35GT. ;-)

First it was, end of june, then july, now its august, and that ship has almost sailed..

Say what you want about Apple, but atleast they know how to ship a fucking product on time..

Ugh.. Sad
