Short of re-writing the rar lib to be compliant with the GPL license, no.

I upgraded xbmc from svn last night and after rebooting and checking if auto logging in to xbmc worked I could browse and play rar files.
however today when I started xbmc i can no longer view rared files.
in xbmc.log I get the same warning "WARNING: Create - Unsupported protocol(rar) in rar://"
Could it have worked yesterday because I only "sudo reboot" from ssh?
Or is there another problem with xbmc?

Perhaps you should read the posts below, they explain exactly what is going on.

If team-xbmc-svn had this option disabled how was I suppose to have it working after the update yesterday but not today?

Sorry, since you are not including any version nor xbmc.log info and I'm not sitting beside you, I don't have a clue. I do know that rar is disabled in PPA builds now.

Compiled 32822 just now, and plays rar-archives without a hitch.

Does that mean that RAR support will be enabled again in future official binary releases?
I installed the latest Xbmcfreak LiveCD 10.08 svn32696 from here:

And I too have the problem with playing rar-archives (it's not working).
