[LINUX] Basic installation questions on Ubuntu
#1
Edit: Can a Mod Change the topic to "[LINUX] Basic installation questions on Ubuntu " please?

Ok, so let me start by saying I'm a TOTAL Linux noob. I've been using windows and OS X for years, but TOTALLY new to linux. I've recently bought a Zotac box and set it up using windows 7, but I'd like to try out Ubuntu and have XBMC Running on on that to see how it performs. With that said I have a few questions (Yes, I've tried searching for the answers, but I've ended up more confused than not)

1. I've installed Ubuntu 10, and I've tried to add the repository by doing "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-svn/ppa/ubuntu lucid main ". However when I try to download the XBMC main package I get dependency errors (Data), and it's not installed. So, could somebody point out a step by step guide on how to get this thing installed on Ubuntu please? (trying to install the Dharma 3 release)

2. I did the Ubuntu drive update and it updated the Nvidia drivers. So is it safe to assume that VDPAU is now enabled and when I get XBMC up and running it will be using VDPAU?

These two arent so much XBMC related, but you guys are experts so i figure I may as well ask.

3. I previously had a drobo drive using with Mac OSX Formatted as OSX Journaled. When I plug it into the box running Ubuntu it says error mounting. Is there a way to repair this so that i DON'T lose the data and it can be recognized by Linux? (I got it working under windows by using MacDrive)

4. When/If I get XBMC working under Linux I'd like the box to boot ubuntu by default without me having to select it from the boot menu. How do I Configure this?

Thanks a lot for any and all help. I KNOW the questions are Noob questions.

you'd do yourself a big favor by using xbmc live. all of this is preconfigured for you...

I thought about it. But I still want to have use of the OS while running XBMC. For basic browsing etc.

I'll try and help a little.

1. Are you using Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) or 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat)? 10.10 is not supported yet, which may be your issue. When you download Ubuntu, there is a dropdown to choose which version you want.

2. I'm not sure. I think I recall seeing the setting for VDPAU in XBMC. Poke around and it should be there somewhere. I can't tell for sure, as I am not at home now.

3. I have never had good luck mounting Mac drives (HFS+) in Linux (although I've only tried once). The easiest thing to do would be to wipe it out and reformat it as NTFS or FAT in a Windows box. NTFS and FAT are supported by all major OSs. You could also disable journaling for the Mac (HFS+) drive. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/hfsplus
