Have installled xbmc on ubuntu Maverick Meerkat , when I start the application it is very laggy and the screen resolution is low. What can I do. The pc is new with 2,5 dual core pentium with 2 gb of ram and and grafichcard NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS 1gb.

Check your /var/log/Xorg.0.log and ~/.xsession-errors for the user that runs XBMC (if the file exists) and the xbmc.log for error messages.
The Xorg.0.log file should shed some light on the issues. I run Ubuntu 10.04 with Nvidia graphics and have no problems.

Make sure desktop effects is disabled.
