Drive Speed

Simple as the title really, will drive speed be an issue on a media server running UNRAID. It'll be used primarily (and at this stage only for) streaming my media collection around the house.

From what I've read I'm inclined to think it should not be an issue but I wanted some friendly opinions?

The first few drives I'm sticking in are 10k WD Blacks (re-using old storage) but I was thinking I could easily cut down some spending by getting 5 or 7.5k rpm drives.

No.

You need to be able to maintain 54mbit/s to each client to support the full blu-ray spec (and will likely be much lower than that usually). That should be easy enough with 5400rpm drives.

I can easily sustain 3 HD streams simultaneously from one 5400 2tb drive, even while the drive is busy doing other file transfers.

As dan1son mentioned, the most demanding HD streams peak at around 50mbps which is about 6-7MB/s. A 5400rpm green drive can read 75MB/s easily which is more that a normal GbE connection can deliver, so no issues here at all.
XBMC Live: i3 530 / GT210 / 2GB / SSD + 2 x Zotac HD01 / 2GB / SSD
unRAID Pro: 6 x 1TB + 2 x 1.5TB + 2 x 2TB + 2 x 500G over GbE
HP Micro Server: SABnzbd+, Sickbeard, Couchpotato, uTorrent, Media Companion, MySQL, MKV Toolnix

Cool thanks guys, the WD20EARS are going for about £65 ish over here which is the best price point by a mile for a good name drive.
