I don't think that's what he was going for... I know it definitely possible with windows. Sharing an optical drive on linux...hmmm... My guess is Yes. Method, I have no idea. Try searching around on linux forums?

i would just rip it

You would need to transcode it first. I'm sure vlc can do this. If no Tversity would probably be able to. I'm not entirely sure on this though

what about sharing the drive and mapping it as source in another xbmc?
are you under linux or windows?

Under linux you can use nfs
Under Windows cifs
