Apparently the newer drives are not only slower but they have 8gb of unusable space rather than the 4GB that the older drives had. Confused

asrock board back in stock at newegg.. I pulled the trigger on what you advise, except for the fan, how is the airflow without the fan with the mi 008 case?

well the PSU stands almost on top of the Fan&HeatSink
which can generate quite a bit of heat...

my advice is to add a FAN....

hey will I be able to hook up a laptop drive straight up to that board, or do I need an adapter, i have a laptop drive..

you can use any drives....

u might need HDD Bracket that u install in your 3.5" bay
and after that u can install your 2.5" laptop drive on the bracket...

Basically, the Bracket converts your 3.5" drive bay into a 2.5" one

Thanks for putting this one together eskro! I'm having a hard time deciding between this build (or similar) and a Zbox. Other than this custom build having space for an optical drive (which I'm not sure I'll need), a full size HD, and being cheaper than any current barebone deals, what are the advantages of going with this rig?

The main thing that's holding me back is size. It's tough to tell from the pictures, but this case seems pretty large; I believe someone on Newegg mentioned it was the size of a large shoebox. So, too big to go behind the TV, and too tall to stack with other flat-ish AV components, like a cable box. And from what I've been reading it's not big enough to put in a capture card for PVR useage.

I think you might need more power if you are going the pvr route.

Are you referring to the CPU or the PSU? In either case I'd say that the proposed build can easily handle PVR duty provided it includes a tuner card that has onboard hardware encoding (which nearly all of the modern cards do).
