Disregarding the side show, aka RFID tags, IMO start with something like this.

Make it look at least as good as that. Improve it! Ideas will then flow...

I could ramble on for hours as I am obsessed with automation but, I'm on the tablet. I use a software product to run all the various hardware. The software can be found at http://www.charmedquark.com. I have a barebones site up at http://www.rethinkconnection.com and there are a few blog posts there, as well. I also shot a lousy video tour of my touch screen interface a week or two ago. I will try to load it up on youtube in the next day or so.
