ok, a reply to myself..

i am a little bit further now. i have discoverd that it must be something with the mp3 tags in one (or more) files.

this is what i did so far:

my music library is devided over 67 folders. i did make a new shared map and did copy the first ten into it.
scanned it and there was no problem with artist view in library. i did this again with the second 10 etc.etc. no problems. i discoverd that it locked up again after placing the last 17 folders into the new map. so there must be something wrong with one or more tags in these folders.

tonight i will look further into it and try to find out wich file is causing the lockups. this means that i will scan each folder seperatly until the 'corrupt' one comes up. then i have to look deeper into that folder examining each file.

if i do find the problem i will post it here.

yes i did. i hide (at least i tried to) all my personal information from smb path - except that "piisej" which i forgot. and there is no special characters, umlauts (äåö) or accents (áé) in my smb path. definetly i do have those in mp3 names and tags.

i had this in my mind too... haven't yet tried that 'cause that is so damn slow way to find exception.. but i'm with you! :thumbsup:

yes. the underlying issue has still not been corrected.

scanning reads the tag data and puts it into the database. as a test, you can enable id3 tag reading and just browse thru those folders. this should cause a problem as well, which is what i believe julpero is experiencing.

i'm assuming (rather hoping) that u have id3 tag reading enabled. please confirm. if you do, please disable it and see if the lockup goes away.

then i started to clean my folder names from smb share. the first folder was named like this

this helped a bit and i manged to listen one song from my playlist. while song was playing i went to enable id-tag reading again and after that back to my music -> lockup. this is what i got from xbox.old.log after reboot:

there is a lot of warnings about kernel32.dll - should i worry about that? and what a heck has been changed between october 2:nd and 10th releases? some (music)database? charset encoding?

i'm sorry. i forgot to mention one important detail... if you had already scanned your files, then disabling id3 tag reading wouldnt have mattered.

if the file is found in the database, then the tag information is read from there, regardless of the state of the id3 tag reading option. so, if you had scanned already, please rename your mymusic6.db file to something else as a test.

when i first time choose my smb share i see blank list. i have to chage (default value) view: list to another, view: icons. after that i see all folders and playlists i have on my smb share, but if i try to play a playlist i have a lockup.

its wierd that you dont see anything until you change your view. i've never seen that before.

now you've changed the situation a little. before you said you couldnt get into your share. now you can, but the lockup occurs when you play the playlist. this leads me to believe that theres some issue with tag attached to the first file in that playlist.

i forgot another thing... whenever a music file is played, the tag information is read from that file. this allows the music overlay to be populated even if id3 tag reading is disabled.

if you're so frustrated switch back to the official 1.1.0 version. the cvs is a constantly changing playground of development. if you want stability, dont use cvs. its as simple as that.

okay.. this is what i got..
after checking all the folders i found the one that is causing the troubles. ofcourse it was one of the last folders i did check... :veryangry:

anyway,
my complete music collection now works in the library artist view if i remove this folder before scanning. placing the folder back and scan again will cause lockup's again so i removed that folder permanent from the shared folder.

the corrupt folder is called: tv themes and contains about 105 famous tv tunes. the strange part is; when i look deeper into the mp3 tags, i cannot find anything strange at first point. no rare symbols whatsoever.(and i am to tired to try all the files one by one in xbmx.)

so you have any clues for me what to look for?
should i look into the file names or just the tags?
some artist names are written between: (artist) symbols
could that be a problem?
or what information do you need from this files to discover the problem?

be sure to also check for any apev2 tags. for mp3's, the tag order is apev2, id3v2, last id3v1. i've seen several situation of users complaining that incorrect information was being displayed and it was because they didnt realize that their files had apev2 tags in them.

yes, i guess it *could* be the filename too. that can be tested by disabling id3 tag reading and browsing to the folder. if it doesnt freeze, then its not the filenames. (just make sure that these files are not in the database.)

and what do you mean by "(artist) symbols" ?

ok - my problem was playlist... i removed all m3u-playlist from smb share and xbmc-cache. all works now fine. i even scanned id3-tags from smb share and no troubles.

i really don't understand what was wrong in my playlists... i went through them and removed all "illegal characters" from playlists and song names.

next i have to try create new playlist and try that...

i updated the xbmc version to the latest available build..(10-28-2005 pimped) rewrote the xml... deleted the saves.. and it hangs again
