Ale
Progress update...
After trying windows 7, 8, ubuntu 13.04, debian, xbmcbuntu and openelec exhaustively I have settled for openelec.

Pros for openelec...
Fast quick install.
seems very lightweight and fast gui.
Sabnzbd, sickbeard, headphones, coachpotato intergrate very nicely from installing one addon.

Cons....
Can not get speed of fan to change with lm_sensors/ pwmconfig, seems controller is not supported in linux, adding modules to the kernel no good. My solution has been to put it in a slightly open draw! Result is its silent doesn't overheat. Not ideal but this works for me.
Hey

has anyone tried using these to play retro games and emulators? I want something like this for XBMC but also want to run MAME and old SNES/N64 classics also. Any thoughts?

Thanks
Also I asked this before with no reply has anyone been able to achieve a cold boot from ir?

Not sure from cold boot...
From standby yes for me

Set in power options in windows ,
power button sends pc to sleep and it'll wake from standby.

Openelec tell it to suspend in the power option tab instead of shutdown.

With these settings it turns on and off into low power sleep with remote power button =)

I see no reason why it wouldn't, have you got xbmc installed on anything to try? Hardware shouldn't be an issue

Ale

Cheers Ale

Is anyone on the forum using a SSD in their Q190, if so, what one?
Any 2.5 inch sata ssd will work, buy the best in your budget.
You won't see much difference if all you use it for is xbmc

I upgraded to a SSD and got quite a difference on the Windows performance index ...
Installed a Samsung 840 and disk performance went from 5.9 -> 8.1
Curiously graphics jumped as well 3.1 -> 4.1

I bought this: Samsung 840

Openelec boots in less than 20 seconds with just a normal hard drive and runs completely from ram when loaded so a ssd for this would be pointless.
I'm glad your happy with it in Windows makes a hell of a difference for the os =)

Thanks Ian, happy to hear this! I thought it was the case to share the instructions I created for you also for the benefit of others.

Cheers,
Ale..
Sorry guys about the shaky cam. This is a video of it booting openelec with the standard 1tb drive that came with it....

Just shows how much Windows bogs it down

This is probably a daft question, but which OpenELEC build are you using? I was thinking of trying it on an SD card or USB stick just to have a play (and I also wanted to see how SAB/CP/SickBeard can be integrated).
The Intel build works fine.

When installed look in the preinstalled openelec repo/ services / sabnzbd suite .
Configure what ports you want to use in add-on settings.
Use your laptop/pc to connect to the correct ports to enter your settings.

I'm using a android app to add stuff to sickbeard now but there's other xbmc add-ons for controlling these apps.
Sickbeards pretty much running on cruise control now :)
