I was running a previous version of XBMC (I "think" it was Eden) for a long time on my Windows 7 machine. Yesterday, I upgraded the machine to Windows 10. I completely uninstalled XBMC and installed the newest Kodi version 15.1. I was able to add all of my music and movies to the library, the scrapper ran just fine, but now...when I open any MKV movie (most of my movies are) I get sound but no video. If I try to hit stop or esc, Kodi crashes. If I try to watch the one AVI movie I have...it runs flawlessly so it has to be some issue with MKV files.

I can also confirm that the Windows 10 native movie player as well as Windows Media Player also do not play my MKV files. The only player that does, is VLC player. Is there an issue with Kodi or should I just tell Kodi to use VLC player when playing my files? If the latter is the best course, does anyone have instructions on how to accomplish that instruction?

Here is my debug log file:

Thanks, in advance.
Did you check you've the latest Win 10 drivers available from the website of whoever made your GPU?
Check your drivers, most importantly graphics&sound
I have an AMD APU and when I went to their website and ran the autodetect utility, it said that it "we are unable to find a driver for your system". The processor is an AMD A8 3850 with a Radeon HD 6550D.

See below:

Don't use autodetect

I'm not sure what you mean by that but if you mean don't use the AMD program that finds the best driver...I also read on the AMD forums that you should uninstall the AMD Catalyst 15.7.1 and let Windows Update find the best driver. So I did that but Windows Update says that my "system is up to date".
Adrock. It's simple and auto detect stinks. Go here: http://www.amd.com/en-gb/products/proces...series-apu

Make sure you download current GPU drivers, and also select the optional download: that will be your chipset drivers.

I highly suggest you uninstall your previous graphics drivers first. I have an A10, and it's the only way to do it.

That's just it though, I have tried everything on the AMD website. First, I tried the easy way and just installed the Catalyst 15.7.1 (which is the autodetect garbage) and while everything else works, I can only play MKV files using VLC player. I also tried the newest beta version of the catalyst software (15.8)...same issue.

So then I tried to manually search for my drivers but when I go here http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/ and choose "manually select your driver" I can't seem to find mine. I choose "APU Accelerated Processor" from the first drop down, then "Desktop APU" or "Mobile APU" and nothing brings up my processor which is the AMD A8-3850 with Radeon HD6550D. Also, no matter which AMD APU I choose, it always goes right back to the same screen and recommends that I download the Catalyst 15.7.1 which includes the AMD Catalyst™ Display Driver version 15.20.1062.1004 which is what I am already running.

This is very frustrating, to say the least. Some of the people in the AMD forums say to uninstall Catalyst and solely use the Windows Update to get drivers but I have tried that too. F
Ok. Take a breath. Back to your orig issue. Try and disable DXVA2

And let's hear the results.

I will try that next...I am actually trying one more time to get the correct (hopefully) AMD drivers. I found a utility called AMD Clean Up Utility and it successfully uninstalled ALL AMD drivers. So now I don't have sound, etc...which is fine. I can always get that back with the standard AMD Catalyst drivers if need be.

So now, the Windows Update is currently downloading a driver for AMD Radeon HD 6550D but it doesn't tell me exactly what it is downloading. I am hoping it will work.

I'll report back as soon as it's done.

Ok, so after the windows update, it just installed the same drivers as before so everything is back to working order...except I still can't play MKV files in Kodi.

I followed the instructions in the link you provided and the strange thing is, the option for "allow hardware acceleration" doesn't exist. Here is a screenshot of the Video > Playback screen in my system:

Change settings to expert

Thank you! That was it. After changing the settings to expert, the acceleration area became it's own line item but when I turned OFF the hardware acceleration, everything works perfectly now. I owe you a beer...even if you are a Wings fan.

Seriously though, thanks a bunch. That had been driving me crazy all day.
No problem, Big Grin

. Dxva2 does more hardware you rendering taking up slack for the processor. Good for lower power boxes. Your a8 should have plenty of processor to leave it unchecked Nod

Secondly there have been some issues with dxva2 on catalyst 15.7 reported, but hit and miss.
Oh, and I have been playing with mine while talking with you, your a8 should be able to play either way. I would readdress your graphics issues. Did you download the most current chipset from the site as well?
