Full Version: Audio passthrough on nVidia SHIELD

I just changed my receiver, and while audio passthrough seemed to work before on my Pioneer VSX-530-K (for all formats), it doesn't seem to work on my new Denon AVR-S510BT... Here is a debug log : http://www.xbmclogs.com/pvzzyhpiv

I tried to play 4 files in this log : two DTS-HD MA 7.1, one Dolby AC3 5.1 and one Dolby TrueHD 5.1. Only the Dolby TrueHD worked, but the receiver didn't display the usual "Dolby TrueHD" on its display. The other ones just output an unpleasant constant noise.

I then tried to play the first file in ES Media Player (comes with ES File Explorer) and it worked perfectly - the display on my AVR showed "DTS-HD MA".

I saw in the SHIELD TV wiki page that HD audio passthrough was a work in progress, and it seems to be confirmed in the general nVidia Shield thread.

I don't understand however why it worked with my Pioneer ... maybe it was in fact not working, and the audio was processed by Kodi before being sent to the receiver? I don't recall seeing any indication on my receiver display of DTS or TrueHD (but maybe it doesn't show on that particular model)...

Thanks in advance for the clarifications!
It'd help if you enabled debugging Wink
Did you check http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=252852 ? I don't see how HD passthrough could have worked for you if you didn't, so you were probably sending multi-channel PCM instead.
Oh I didn't see this thread, pretty much all the information I was looking for is in there! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction! I will give these builds a try, and if I can help by providing information concerning issues I might run into, I'll post my debug logs there (without forgetting to enable debugging this time around heh).

Just out of curiosity, I searched a bit on this but couldn't really find an answer: what is the benefit of sending the DTS (or Dolby) stream directly to the AVR for decoding, besides saving some computing power? Does it actually improve audio in any way or it's really just to "do the things right"?

If you ask me, nothing Wink
But audiophiles might object to this, I'm not really a specialist.
Hello.

Can someone tell me if there is a way to make Kodi output the dolby atmos bitstream to my receiver? I know my ps4 can do it (my receiver shows Dolby Atmos correctly as input) when I activate the passthough option. I've tried the same on Kodi on my Nvidia Shield and it does not work!

(I am sorry if this is not the right thread to post this question)

Thanks
Gilson

I can understand, that you did not want to read the 70 pages of the Shield TV thread before posting there, but if you had read the few posts inside this thread, you would have known, that you need the experimental build from here: http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=252852

Thank you so much. I tried the experimental version and Dolby Atmos does work!!! I am so happy to finally be able to put my new HT set up to work Wink
