Since this is a picture quality thread i hope it is ok to ask this despite that it is not about the same picture problem.

Tried searching but havent found an answer to this question, had a Nuc earlier and that i had sett to Bicubic and i can se that both SD content and 720p content looks worse on my Satv compared to my Nuc unless i enabled bilinear scaling.

Is the lack of Bicubic scaling an general android problem or a nvidia shield problem? Does Satv even have the gpu grunt to support bicubic scaling or higher?

Thank you for your awesome work, it is greatly appreciated

There is no reason to speculate that it won't be out until summer. It is just as likely they saw the 3.0 release date slipping and push it for after the currently release. That doesn't mean they aren't currently developing on another branch while the 3.0 release is being tested. The time difference between 2.0 and 2.1 was only two weeks.
I agree, It spend a lot of time to change android version, but Quality issue is another thing, so I'm confident for the 3.1 update will be available quickly Wink
Very reassuring to see an acknowledgment to the problem and a possible fix coming.

I have done a comparison between 1) nVIDIA Shield 2) Google Nexus Player 3) Amazon Fire TV 2 4) Apple TV 4 5) Minix U1 6) Raspberry Pi 2 and 7) Intel Haswell 4570S HTPC running openELEC Kodi v17. All devices expect for Minix U1 was set to output RGB Limited color space. HDMI output from each device was captured as uncompressed RGB using a Blackmagicdesign DeckLink 4K Extreme 12G card. The captured videos were opened in Davinci Resolve and an exact frame was exported in DPX format which was later converted to PNG in Adobe Photoshop.

Here are the frame captures. I have assigned a random letter to each of the devices for each movie scene.

Samsara Clip2 https://flic.kr/s/aHskpFPPDn
The Dark Knight Rises https://flic.kr/s/aHskpFQ1P8

It would be interesting to see how many can actually pick SATV out from this group.
Ok here is my very non-professional opinion. They look almost identical, but my opionion is that two of them have worse quality than the other that are very simlair
Gravity: C best, A, B, E, F, G similair, D worse (missing detalis)
Inside Out: A and G seems slighly more washed (missing details in the yellow dress) compared to the other ones
Pi: A and E are less colorful (worse)
Samsara1: A and C are more dull and missing details
Samsara2: C and D seems to miss detalis
Dark knight: D and F are missing some details (almsot impossible to see)

Quite impressive for a "non-professional" opinion Smile Did you cheat? (Just kidding). You have actually picked the two devices that have slightly lesser picture quality, but SATV is neither of them! I will PM you the device list.
Just make it public then the big discussions can begin :-)

I think I will wait for some more time, but I have PMed you the list.
Unforunately the Pioneer AVR converted the RGB Limited to YCbCr 4:2:0 (no setting to change that for 4k signal) which resulted in grey color where there should have been deep black. So I had to replace it to be able to use the Shield.

I have also a problem with the black levels on the nvidia Shield TV when I connect it to the tv (LG 55EC930V 1080p) via the Pioneer av receiver VSX-930-K HDMI output.
If I connect the Nvidia Shield directly to the tv, the black levels and image are OK.
If I connect via the AV receiver, the Black levels are very bad.

Any solution?
As you are using 1080p, you can set the Video Parameter to "Pure". Then the Pioneer will send the video signal through unprocessed.
Unfortunately, this option is not available for 4K and the Pioneer hotline said, they are not planing on implementing it for 4k in their VSX line.
For those interested, here is the list of devices for the test images in post #70

Based on the responses (n=7), Google Nexus Player was unanimously selected as the device with the worst picture quality! Not a single person picked the SHIELD!

Could you add the variance? :-)
I hope I am not hijacking the thread, but with all the talks about "Vulkan" API, I wonder if anybody had a chance to look at the specs to see if KODI can take advantage of the features it brings?
would Vulkan allows "post-processing" similar to "vdpau", I really miss the filters my KODI x86 HTPC setup has and I wonder if we can bring them back with Vulkan.
