I did a apt dist-upgrade / reboot and reinstalled Kodi..... I had planed to restore my backup but ... at this point if all I have to fix is Zoneminder and reconfigure Kodi I'm happy. It was likely just some bad libs/depends. Thank god I didn't have to reinstall. Still have a little work to get pulseaudio-dynamic-range-compression working but that's really it!

I looked at https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=324365 seems to be sort of the same issue maybe ? VA-API  not working ?

* followed  guide for mesa https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions...n-debian-9  mesa 18.2.8-2~bpo9+1
* vlc renders perfectly with almost no CPU where as before it was like 50% CPU so I know GPU is working on some level
* xfce loads fine
* chrome://gpu https://rmccurdy.com/stuff/gpu.html
* plex transcodes just fine no CPU
* kodi logs https://pastebin.com/f1YHWjQt
* kodi runs fine over xfwd /ssh so must be video issues ?
* dmesg https://rmccurdy.com/stuff/dmesg.txt
* kodi 5:17.6-dmo1+deb9u3
* dpkg -l https://rmccurdy.com/stuff/dpkg.txt

You are running a non supported version and you are not member of video group.
And you don't have gdb installed, so we cannot see the backtrace.

Video group ?

cat /etc/group | grep -ia video
video:x:44:plex,www-data
ls -laht /etc/group
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1.1K Jun 25 11:50 /etc/group

How do I update with Debian to a supported version ? I tried to compile from source but none of the instructions worked also tried build.leia script and hacking it to death to get it to actually do anything  with no luck. Should upgrade to Debian 10 'buster' ? I basically swapped out the motherboard and have everything working but the kodi.bin. At this point I spent over 12hrs trying to get it all to work... it's starting to look like ill have to try a fresh install of Debian 9 or 10 ?
