I do see this error when the clip starts:
DEBUG: Error: Requested setting (audiooutput.passthroughdevice) was not found. It must be case-sensitive
could that be relevant?

Hi davilla,
I have downsampled the video stream in ton.mkv so CPU isn't overstressed now: "ton_segented-001-reduced.mkv"
Audio stream kept intact.
in XBMC the Downmix to strereo is off.
detailed logs here:
Tried 3 movies with AAC, still the ticking sound only.

Also I'm not sure why is the 5.1ch sound downmixed to 4ch, according to this piece of log:
Code:
#
18:38:01 T:51403776 M: 35811328 DEBUG: CoreAudioRenderer::Initialize: Input Stream Format [lpcm] Mixable 6 Channel 16-bit Signed Integer (48000Hz)
#
18:38:01 T:51403776 M: 35827712 DEBUG: CoreAudioRenderer::Initialize: Output Stream Format [lpcm] Mixable 4 Channel 32-bit Floating Point (44100Hz)
Please find the sample mkv here:

I'm really curious whether my AV receiver does not like the sound output or I 'm facing some generic error here. Downmix to stereo works, I have 2 ch sound.

So update xmbc to version 9.1.1beta1 svn-24886m and I have no audio when trying to play dts or dd5.1 through the digital connection. But again, the same movies play back fine on VLC, quicktime or apples dvd player, so I know that it's not an equipment or file issue. This really bums me out that I can't get any 5.1 audio out of xmbc. When I select analog, it sounds like I am just getting the L & R speaker, because I can only hear the music or people speaking from the left or right side. If anyone has a version that will play back dts and dd 5.1 on a ppc could you please let me know?
Thank,
Steve

Does anyone using xmbc on a ppc have dd 5.1 or dts 5.1 working? What about on an intel mac, or does xmbc handle audio the same way on both systems?
Thanks,
Steve

That's not something I can test :-(
Pastebin a debug log when trying to play the movie (with 9.11 beta1). I will look at it.

How do I do that?

Have a look at my signature. You should have everything there...
Start XBMC, show the problem (play the movie with no sound) and exit.
Then get the debug log (/Users/<username>/Library/Logs/xbmc.log)
Use a site like http://www.pastebin.com to paste the full log.

I too have an occasional 'no sound, or chattering' issue on my ATV.
Running most recent Camelot Beta 1. I have the DD5.1 set to passthrough. I am using .mkv files comressed using the Staxrip program.
When I have 'no sound', I have to back out of Movies, go to Music, start a song (sound goes ON)... then go back to movies and it plays the DD5.1. (note: when there is no sound, nothing has sound... not even the sounds from the interface while moving around through the various XBMC screens).
When I get the 'chattering' sound upon starting a movie, I have to stop the movie, and then start it again. Then the DD5.1 is fine.
Doing this has been clearing the problem, or allowing me to watch movies.

I don't see any thing wrong, it setups audio for passthrough, gets hog mode and seems to be quite happy. And you say you get no audio at all, just silence ? Humm maybe something wrong with ppc build of libdts-powerpc-osx.so ? Guessing here. I don't have a ppc box that can output digital audio so I can't verify.

Yes, just silence. Does anyone with a ppc get 5.1 out of xmbc?
Thanks,
Steve
