Currently there is only list and icons and the icons are huge compared to confluence skin.

What is slow? Need some more info, preferably as detailed as possible please.

You set the default background now so nobody needs to replace files or deal with that just pick the one you want in skin settings and your good.

Something else, something else, Is missing the notification icons.

Depending on your hardware and chosen branch you may see a speed increase if you put the Textures.xbt file from 2.0.5 into the skins media folder. Only use the isengard branch.

The icon is not handled by me so it is either a Kodi issue or the icon is not getting passed correctly.

Forget about using master branch. Stick to the releases from the repo. I see you are using a raspberry pi. Some settings may cause a performance issue on low end hardware. I suggest you try turning off options that effect the home menu like animated backgrounds to see if you get a performance increase. If it has no effect try other options and see what works and what doesn't if you find the culprit report back and I will see what can be done to increase it for low spec machines.

The many DB files does not matter they are automatically created when Kodi updates its DB to a new version they are there in case you need to downgrade your version of Kodi.

I also suggest you backup your existing setup then try a completely new install and add nothing but your local media my repo only and install the skin to also test if you have added something that is slowing down performance and is not skin related.
