I'll keep it short:

I use compilation albums,
They are listed as follows:

C:\Albums\Now that's what I call music 1
Etc
Etc

I have a folder.jpg and a fanart.jpg included.

As these have various artists the info structure is as follows:

Album artist: Various Artists
Contributing Artist: Various Artists
Album title: Now that's what I call music 1

When I scan these in they work perfectly fine, except for my local fanart.jpg being ignored and favoured over some random "gold/black music note" fanart which is really not in fitting with my setup.

Is there a way to force fanart.jpg to be picked up or to set all "Various Artists" albums to use a different default fanart?

I have checked my artists section and "Various Artosts" is not listed as an artist so it's not like I can just change the default artwork for this "artist"

Any ideas?

The post you're enquiring about is 4 years old Likely that the user was satisfied in some fashion, likely with self education in the wiki's. If indeed you are aslo having issues, you might look at Artwork (wiki) or post in the music support area https://forum.kodi.tv/forumdisplay.php?fid=263
