Linux XBMC Crash/Hang
#1
Hi All,

Noob here having sporadic hang and/or crash problems with my new xbmc NUC box - not sure if this is an xbmc, unix or even hardware problem.

These events happen approx every 30 minutes for no apparent reason but perhaps more often when I am trying to access the xbmc box with vnc or x2go while it is playing music.

I generally only use XBMC for music.

Sometimes xbmc just hangs silently. Other times it makes a rapid clicking sound and at other times it totally crashes unix and gives a
screenload of numbers on the screen with the following at the bottom:

drm_kms_helper: panic occurred, switching back to text console

I have looked through the logs and cannot find anything I can pinpoint as the problem.

XBMC was installed onto a clean build of kubuntu 14.04 x64

I have no idea where to look to solve this one - not even sure if I have posted this in the right place.

I have pasted the logs of what seem to be the usual culprits - please let me know if more info is required. These logs refer to a run in which the machine was booted at 20:19 on 4th Jan and the system crashed 20 minutes later at approx 20:41.

/var/log/syslog: http://paste.ubuntu.com/9669774

Xbmc.log : http://paste.ubuntu.com/9669788

Very grateful for any pointers you can provide.

Thanks

Neil

I am pretty sure that error relates to graphics. Xbmc does not work well with vnc. Not sure what x2go is.

The real question is why you would use xbmc just for music when there are far better options?

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply. I appreciate that XBMC does not play well with vnc and don't often use it that way. However, sometimes it saves me a walk to the TV!!

X2Go is a neat alternative to RDP which I found works better - I was never able to make xrdp work well

I play music 12 hours per day - movies only for a few hours per week!

The problem occurs even when xbmc is playing alone - just less frequently.

There are so many errors in your kernel dmesg from multiple places. Please reboot and do a full memory test.
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

Fritsch,

Thanks for the reply. I have just run memtest86 and there were indeed many errors. I will get the memory replaced by Corsair and try again.

Cheers
