2nd HDD instead DVDROM
#1
Hello all,

my story begins like this: in the night I watched some movie, turn off the XBOX, at the morning I want listen some music, and it won't boot. I get 12 as error code, checked that on website - problem with dvdrom. I cannot believe it is dvdrom problem, so I tested my XBOX HDD in PC - it not responded (using ultimate boot cd hdd tools - I cannot even format it, so I thought it is hdd problem. I bought new 500 GB hdd, then I discovered it is not problem with hdd, but my dvdrom is destroyed.

I connected new HDD instead of DVDROM, now I can boot my XBOX like before, which is good - old hdd works. I dont need DVDROM in XBOX (I dont use cd/dvds anymore), so it should be really nice, if I can use that 500 GB hdd. Problem is - I cannot format it. I have modchipped hdd, LBA 48 support (v3), in XBPartioner I see only first hdd, in evolution I make a meny for formatting G: drive, but no success at all.

Questions:
- how I can know, if the 500 GB (2nd hdd instead of DVDROM) is connected properly ? I should see that in XBMC info somewhere ?
- G: should be used for this hdd ?
- how I can format it ? (only thing, which come to my mind is replace old hdd, with new one, boot from cd and format it using EvolutionX/XBPartioner - problem is, I dont have DVDROM here and it is quite complicated...) - so if it is possible (it should be!) to do that without DVDROM, should be really nice.

Thanks for any help.

I told you on IRC the other day that you CAN NOT do this. No one was ever able to patch a bios to support it and development on anything similar is long since dead. A quick search of the X-S forums would have quickly revealed this to you had you bothered to look.

hi althekiller,

thanks for quick answer - on IRC I didnt see your message, because I am in Thailand, on one island, and here internet connection really suxx (I am writing this reply for 2nd time - dont want to see my ping stats...).

Anyway - thanks for valuable info, so I guess I should do this:
1. put new hdd and dvdrom into xbox
2. boot from dvdrom, xevolution
3. format hdd
4. put new hdd instead of dvdrom, and old hdd instead of new hdd.

should work, right ? I also get G: and it will be usable...or I should use xbpartioner for that ?

Thanks a lot m8

From what I understand, 2 hard drives won't work that way. You need 1 hard drive, 1 DVD-ROM. G is only for a second PARTITION on the hard drive, not a second hard drive.

Your steps should be

1. put old hdd and dvdrom into xbox
2. backup old hard drive over ftp
3. remove old hdd and put new hdd into xbox
4. boot from dvdrom, xevolution
5. format hdd
6. copy files back on to new hard drive

Yes, that's what althekiller was trying to say, I beleive.

Thanks a lot guys, didn't know that. My friend told me it is possible (he is using 2 hdds, so I have to take a look at his place, how he use them, I suppose it is switching method, which is a little lame).

Anyway, as I should read, there is NO possibility (in easy/cheap way) how to have 2 working hdds at one time in xbox. I use XBOX only for watching movies/listening music so I dont really care about games support...

It is a little pitty, so what, I will replace my old 120 gb hdd, with new 500 gb.

Thanks for help, m8s - it is much clearer for me now.
