Android Fire Cube 2022 - "Super Resolution" upscaling in Kodi 21
#1
Hi

I got a Fire Cube 2022 recently and I'm quite happy with it so far. Fire Cube has a "Super Resolution" feature and I'm trying to get it to work in Kodi 21.

In Fire Cube options I have under Display resolution set to "Automatic" and "Super Resolution" on. In Kodi I set Display to 4k and whitelisted all 4K variants and all 1080p variants.

When I play 1080p ~24Hz content my TV switches to 1080p ~24Hz which I think it means my Samsung Q70R TV does the upscaling?

I have read that Super Resolution in Fire Cube upscales 1080p to 4k and outputs 4k, not 1080p. I'm confused...

Does Fire Cube Super Resolution work in Kodi? If it does work what resolution should I see my TV switching to e.g. if I play 1080p should I see my TV switching to 4K when Super Resolution is working?

Thanks.

Try removing all 1080p variants from the whitelist.

because you told Kodi it's "OK" to switch resolutions then that is exactly what it is doing, if you want scaling you do not whitelist the resolution you want scaled
see last response from Hitcher and remove the 1080p resolutions from the whitelist if you do "NOT" want to output 1080p "at 1080p"

If I remove 1080p from the Whitelist then Kodi will do upscaling from 1080p to 4K which I don't want.

So the way I understand if I whitelist 1080p then my TV does AI upscaling to 4k (which is confusing itself as it states 1080p input when I press Info button on the TV).

What I'd like to know, please, is how to make Kodi use Fire Cube 'Super Resolution' which is another form of AI 4k upscaling from e.g. 1080p.

Why do you think that Kodi does the upscaling? By default, it uses whatever magic the vendor implementation of Android's MediaCodec provides. Kodi can scale videos, but that's usually expensive for low-end hardware.

Which is to be expected. Your device sends a 1080p signal to the TV.

This depends purely on the vendor implementation. If you didn't change the rendering method from MediaCodec.

It probably works the best with whitelist completely empty. Don't try to be too clever. Smile
